Coffee lovers are becoming ever more discriminating as well as cost conscious, with many refusing to pay the ridiculous prices at the large high street coffee shops and choosing to make their own coffee at home instead.
Unfortunately, you only have to carry out a Google search to realise how many hundreds of models of coffee machines are on offer from a multitude of companies. This may look incredibly intimidating, assuming it is your first foray into the coffee machine marketplace.
How then do you choose your perfect coffee maker from the masses out there?
First you need to be aware of what styles of coffee makers are available and additionally what they can do for you with respect to your own coffee preferences. Somewhat surprisingly, this really restricts the volume of information you are confronted with and simplifies your choices immensely.
Believe it or not there are only 5 chief types of coffee machine for sale to the UK domestic user:
Automatic or Bean to Cup,
Espresso or Manual,
Pod or Capsule,
Nespresso Capsule,
Filter
In this review we will look at each of these categories briefly to give you an idea of what is involved with each machine and give some useful examples of machines we have available within each category. This list will be subject to occasional change as the manufacturers are regularly looking to improve upon their offerings in a highly competetive marketplace.
Bean to cup machines use whole fresh coffee beans, with many of them capable of using both beans and ground coffee. At the push of a button a bean to cup coffee maker will grind the coffee beans and brew the coffee directly into a cup and eject used coffee grinds into a tray. Many models also have an on board automatic frother to provide perfect Cappuccinos of professional quality.
…………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………
Our top recommendation is the DeLonghi PrimaDonna ESAM6700, the top of the range bean to cup coffee machine from DeLonghi.
…………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………
Considered to be the heart and soul of real coffee, Espresso coffee is not simply a short black shot of coffee, it is also the actual technique of making coffee. Cappuccino, latte & Americano drinks are all prepared from the basic espresso recipe.
Often referred to as pump machines espresso makers incorporate the traditional method of preparing espresso by filling a filter holder with ground espresso coffee which is then locked into the machine and the pump forces hot water under pressure through the coffee grounds.
Espresso coffee machines offers the user a manual method of coffee making and a high degree of control which can give a true sense of care and enjoyment in the preparation of every cup of coffee.
This traditional form of coffee maker is one of the most cost effective means of preparing a delicious fresh coffee particularly if used in conjunction with a modern coffee grinder to prepare on demand coffee grounds.
…………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………
Our recommendation for a decent ground coffee espresso maker is the Cuisinart EM200U, a stylish espresso maker in brushed stainless steel finish.
…………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………
Pods and capsules are measured doses of freshly ground coffee, typically around 7 or 8g but some are stronger for those with a taste for strong coffee, housed in either a vacuum packed capsule or a perforated filter bag resembling a tea bag. The pod or capsule is simply inserted into the machine and disgarded neatly at the end. Several of the top manufacturers have developed their own form of coffee pod or capsule and built machines which will accept either their own pods/capsules or freshly ground coffee.
They are popular for their no fuss and no mess approach to coffee, but are relatively expensive on a per cup basis relative to ground coffee or beans.
The Nespresso coffee capsule system is such a popular means of preparing coffee now that there is a multitude of machines designed specifically for the capsules patented and produced by the food giant Nestle. The Nespresso capsule coffee makers are nothing more than a subset of the pod and capsule machines, but they do ensure consistently good coffee in a wide variety of strengths and flavours. One note of caution is that these machines probably make the most expensive domestic coffee, but it is still much cheaper than that available commercially from coffee houses.
…………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………
Our preferred recommendation is the Magimix Nespresso M190 CitiZ and Milk Coffee Maker, a superb Nespresso capsule machine available in black, silver or cream.
…………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………
A simple filter coffee maker will generally make around 10 to 12 cups in a very quick filtration machine. Perfect for those who need to make several cups at once for those in a hurry or simply want a cup on demand. These are generally fairly cheap machines from the most popular manufacturers, but lack the features of the higher spec equipment now available.
…………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………
Our recommendation for a decent looking filter coffee maker is the Dualit Coffee Percolator, beautifully stylish cordless percolator in polished stainless steel which will make up to 12 x 125ml cups of coffee in just 10 minutes.
…………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………
Summary
If you like the idea of practicing to develop your Barista skills, experimenting with differing quantities, strengths, using beans and grounds or just love to tinker with kitchen gadgets, then the ground coffee Espresso machines and the bean to cup machines should fit comfortably into your lifestyle.
However, if you prefer the idea that the coffee is measured for you and there is no mess to clear up then a Pod or Capsule, or Nespresso coffee maker is probably the right choice for you. Alternatively, if you have the funds, then an automatic bean to cup machine may also be suitable, as these offer one touch functionality or a wide array of features if you like experimenting.
Finally, if you need to prepare a number of cups at once … at work say … or you fancy a long coffee without the wait, then perhaps a filter machine is most suited to your needs.
Now that you have hopefully decided what type of coffee maker you would like, you just have to decide which of the manufacturer’s you will favour with your custom.

DeLonghi coffee makers are admired by countless coffee lovers. This leading coffee maker company offers a multitude of machines in a variety of styles to fit the needs of users.
Effectively there are just four core varieties of coffee makers for sale from DeLonghi to the home-based user. Combi machines are available from some retailers, but these are essentially combinations of two or more of the styles listed.
Bean to Cup,
Espresso and Pod,
Nespresso Capsule,
Filter
DeLonghi Bean to Cup Coffee Machines
Bean to cup machines use whole fresh coffee beans, with many of them capable of using both beans and ground coffee. At the push of a button a bean to cup coffee maker will grind the coffee beans and brew the coffee directly into a cup and eject used coffee grinds into a tray.
There are ten super automatic bean to cup coffee makers in the DeLonghi collection which can be sub-divided into 4 further ranges the starter range called the Magnifica range, the ECAM range, the Perfecta collection and finally the premier PrimaDonna models which truly stand out in any kitchen.
Every model in the range has its own unique character, with a specific selection of features.
The key factors to look out for which differentiate these machines from each other are the use of audio signalling at the top end, variation of the cappuccino frothing system from the ‘Cappuccino System’ to the automatic IFD frothing system which produces rapid frothy Cappuccinos and the cappuccino unit has an auto clean function, the system displays get more sophisticated, ranging from button operation to touchscreen digital displays, the size of the bean container increases as you progress up the range, the ‘LONG’ coffee button option is only available at the ESAM6700 level, and programmable switch-on is only available in the more advanced machines of the range and personalization and memory settings to program in your ideal settings for that perfected brew only comes as you progress to the more advanced models.
Delonghi Espresso Coffee Machines
The very popular DeLonghi espresso coffee makers are steam driven machines that produce a very strong coffee. Considered to be the heart and soul of real coffee, Espresso coffee is not just a short black shot of coffee with a crema head, it is also the actual technique of making coffee. Cappuccino, latte & Americano drinks are all prepared from the basic espresso recipe.
Espresso makers operate via a pump forcing hot water under high steam pressure through ground coffee housed in a filter holder locked into the machine with a simple twist.
The majority of the modern DeLonghi pump espresso machines accept both ground coffee and easy serving espresso (ESE) pods thanks to the new filter holder.
These (ESE) pods are a pad of about 7g of ground coffee, pre tamped and wrapped in filter paper. One pod will make one shot and, like a tea bag, it is thrown away after one use. For many this is the joy of this system of coffee making, there is no used grounds to dispose of and no messy residue to clear out of your machine and no half used bags of coffee open to the elements.
There are eight espresso makers in the current DeLonghi range of which six can use either ground coffee or coffee pods and additionally, the Icona machine, with its retro design is available in four finishes; Azure Blue, Pearl White, Scarlet Red, and Onyx Black.
The two machines which are not capable of using the pods are currently the Bar14 intro level machine (Editors Note: no longer available) and the EC152CD machine.
These machines can all make cappuccinos either from the steam pipe, or the ‘Cappuccino System’ which mixes steam, air and milk, or the top end machine, the EC750 which uses the patented Instant Froth Dispenser (IFD) which dispenses a frothy, milky cascade directly into the cup.
Other selected features to look out for on individual models include the cup warmer, the crema device for ensuring the perfect crema to your espresso and the water level indicator on the reservoir.
Frequently used with a separate DeLonghi coffee grinder this type of coffee maker gives a traditional approach to coffee making and the models available can be among the most cost effective to purchase.
DeLonghi Nespresso Lattissima Coffee Makers
As a sub group of pod and capsule machines, the popular DeLonghi Nespresso Coffee Makers use the exclusive, patented Nespresso capsule system which features capsules filled with good quality coffee that is sourced from all around the world.
One note of caution is that despite the advantage of the no mess approach, these machines generally make the most expensive domestic coffee due to the cost of the capsules, but it is still much cheaper than that available commercially from coffee houses.
There are currently six machines in the Latissima range for using the Nespresso capsules exclusively, pumping 19 bar pressure water through the capsules to produce a great espresso coffee base. All feature a patented “IDF System” to ensure delicious cappuccino, latte macchiato or simply hot milk. A one button cleaning cycle and a milk carafe that can be stored in the fridge ensure ease of use. The top models in the range have a cup warmer.
DeLonghi Drip Filter Coffee Makers
Filter coffee machines drip hot water onto a bed of ground coffee housed in a filter and collect the brew in a jug with a warming plate beneath to keep your coffee hot at all times.
The 4 models of easy to use filter coffee makers currently on offer from DeLonghi to the domestic user will make between 10 and 12 cups in a very quick time. Perfect for those who need to make several cups at once for those in a hurry or simply want to enjoy a long cup on demand.
The filter machines are the introductory level offering from DeLonghi, lacking the features of the other styles of machine on offer, but they are reasonably priced.
All have the warming plate to keep the carafe hot, and have a non-drip device to allow the jug to be removed at any time, even when the coffee is brewing. The ICM30 and ICM40 also feature complete frontal loading allowing easy access to the coffee filter for the grounds and the water tank.
A Last Note
DeLonghi coffee makers can be found in devotees homes all over the world. Many coffee lovers swear by DeLonghi machines and refuse to use any other coffee maker. The company offers a wide array of coffee maker models to fit your individual needs and budgets. Well worth a look for coffee fans across the world.

The CitiZ range of coffee machines from Magimix combines sophisticated technology with the love of modern retro design and the appreciation of fine coffee.
Designed around the nespresso coffee capsule system, the entry level machine in the range still produces a decent espresso or lungo depending upon your preferences within just minutes, essentially because the capsule system ensures that just the right amount of freshly roasted coffee is brewed, without all the mess and fuss created by grinding, measuring or tamping coffee. The largest of the three machines on offer within the Citiz range, the M190 Citiz & Co coffee maker is the innovative machine with double-head functionality that can prepare two cups of coffee simultaneously. Ideal for those who like to share their morning coffee, or like two cups all to themselves!
Designed around the Nespresso coffee pod range, each of the double heads operates entirely independently, so if you only want one morning cuppa, then you only need to use one half of the coffee machine.
The highly automated set up is simple to operate, meaning you can make deliciously fresh espresso/short or lungo/long coffees within a few simple steps. Fill the water tank (takes up to 1.4L), lift the lever, pop in your preferred choice coffee pod (and this is another benefit – if you and your other half prefer different flavours at any point in time then you can easily have different flavours with this machine), push the lever down, choose lungo or espresso and that is all there is to it.
If you find the coffee is not hot enough for you, simply run a hot water charge through the machine first to warm your cup and you will be fine, so you and your other half can have the temperature you both prefer too. The thermoblock system is designed to heat water extremely rapidly and the 19bar max system pumps water through quickly, so a cuppa takes typically 60 seconds or so to prepare (depends on drip rate, choice of long or short).
Only model available in the range is black, model no 11305.
